Most people would like to assume that all humans have a certain code of ethics that they live by. This code would, for example, require a person to report the corrupt behavior of others. Unfortunately, one man claims that after he reported such alleged behavior, he was fired for doing so. Just as employees in Massachusetts have a right to do in a similar situation, the man has recently filed a wrongful termination lawsuit in response.
The plaintiff, the director of utilities for a town, claims that he became aware that the commissioner of the utility authority was suffering from financial problems. As a result, he claims that the commissioner was attempting to secure a loan for $1.5 million. He allegedly negotiated with Crown Bank to move the authority's accounts there if he was granted the loan.
According to the lawsuit, the plaintiff was approved for the loan after the town's board voted to move the accounts to Crown Bank. He further claims that once he expressed his concerns to the town auditor regarding to loan and pending transfer of accounts, the defendant began harassing him. He is asking for back pay, reinstatement and other damages.
A representative for the authority stated that there would be no comment as the case involved a personnel matter. All employees in Massachusetts and across the country should feel comfortable reporting suspected corrupt or criminal behavior without the fear of retaliation through wrongful termination. Anyone who feels he or she has been a victim of such a practice can seek legal recourse in a civil court.
